Ground Nutmeg - 70g

Nutmeg has grown naturally in the spice gardens of Ceylon from early 15th century. Carefully handpicked fragrant kernels are sundried naturally and milled to produce this exotic, fragrant powder.

The hard brown seed from the nutmeg tree (a tropical evergreen) has a warm, spicy sweet flavour.  The Nutmeg seed is ground or grated (see whole nutmeg) and used to add depth to savoury dishes or to round out other sweet flavours. It is most notably associated with winter baking and spiced beverages.

No additives, no preservatives.

Ingredients: Nutmeg

Origin: India

Enjoy Me...

  • Nutmeg goes particularly well with broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, cheese, custards, eggs, fruits, lamb, pasta, potatoes, pumpkin, raisins, ricotta cheese, rice, sausages, spinach, squash, stuffings and veal.

How Interesting...

  • The nutmeg tree is indigenous to the Banda Islands of Indonesia but is also grown in the Caribbean, especially in Grenada. The first harvest of nutmeg trees takes place 7-9 years after planting, and the trees reach their full potential after 20 years.
  • At one time, nutmeg was one of the most valuable spices. It has been said that in England, several hundred years ago, a few nutmeg nuts could be sold for enough money to enable financial independence for life.
  • Traditionally, nutmeg is mixed with a half teaspoon of lime juice and used as a natural remedy for diarrhea or vomiting, even in toddlers and young children.
