Arborio Rice (Organic) - 500g

Arborio rice has short, fat and slightly oval-shaped kernels with a pearly white exterior.  It has a delicious, creamy texture -  making it perfect for your favourite risotto dishes.

To cook, pop some olive oil or butter in a pan and toss in Arborio rice. Cook until the grains are translucent to reduce their starch content. Then add water or stock in parts, stirring constantly, until the rice is soft and creamy.

Ingredients: Organic Arborio Rice

Origin: Product of Italy, packed in New Zealand

Certification: Biogro Organic

Enjoy Me...

  • Unlike other rice varieties, avoid rinsing your arborio when making risotto to preserve that starch.
  • Be sure to cook your arborio over medium heat. Too low heat, and the risotto will be soggy. If the heat is too high, the liquid evaporates too fast before the rice can absorb enough of it to cook and plump it up.
  • Toasting the rice in butter or oil is an important step, as it prevents the grains from sticking together. So be sure carry this out before adding the liquid. When the rice starts to get fragrant and opaque, you can move to the next step.
  • Adding a teaspoon of organic turmeric powder gives your dish a lovely, golden orange glow.

How Interesting...

  • Did you know that short grain rice, like arborio contains a starch called amylopectin, that breaks down easily when cooked and gives risotto is lovely creamy texture.
  • Arborio is an Italian white, short-grain rice named after the town of Arborio in the Po Valley, where it is traditionally grown.
